For most of my life I have had a cat or two or sometimes more. When I was very young, my family's cat had a litter of kittens and a passerby--seeing that we seemed to be breeders--dropped another cat's litter in our back yard. We had, as the woman in the Thurber cartoon put it, cats the way most people had mice.
I've had cats and I've had dogs and, while I like both, cats suit my personality better. They're more self-sufficient, and are more likely to express affection by quiet, intimate gestures than great big hugs and slobbering kisses.
The stories, poems and spoofs that follow provide insight into the minds of cats, particularly the two toms who currently live with me, Okie and Rocco. Cats wouldn't seem so mysterious to people if they'd only listen to them, as poets such as Christopher Smart and I do. He and I may be crazy, but we can function as long as we take our feline medication.
